Sleeves: Part 2

Posted in Knitting, Photography tagged , , , at 4:23 pm by sbub

Puff Jacket sleeveI sat down yesterday after posting & got stuck into the sleeves. They aren’t that bad after all. I think the problem was more my head space then the project. I tried to take some shots which show how the cast on mid row creates the “Puff”, I didn’t do such a good job really.

Oh and while we are talking about taking photos of projects, I’d like to show off my new Topman Mini Studio. Mini StudioMini Studio
Was a real bargain, and I think I will get heaps of use out of it. It has either the blue or on the reverse a grey background which velcro in place, but I am going to get a white also as I think sometimes white would be much better, and it folds up so small, which is very important in our little unit.

One other thing to show off, the damage done to our admittedly very sad fence, from the current storm.

Ok off to finish those sleeves. :)

Sleeves

Puff Sleeve jacket frontsI seem to have 2nd sock syndrome with the sleeves for the Puff Sleeve Jacket.

I did really well on the back & fronts but for some reason I can’t settle to the sleeves, maybe it is the daunting 120 stitchs per sleeve or the strange construction of them. Instead of doing a separate arm band that is sewn onto the wide sleeve, you do the band then on the next row you cast on 16st evenly spaced 4 times. This really confused me to start with, it leaves holes, but then I read the pattern again and worked out you sew the holes into darts when your done. I’m not too convinced on this. I will make a real effort tonight to get them done, I could really do with this jacket for over my new dress.

Puff Sleeve Jacket

Posted in Knitting tagged , , at 5:53 pm by sbub

True to my word i have cast on for the Puff Sleeve Jacket from the winter 07 issue of Vogue Knitting. I brought the yarn way back in March at the earthquake sale and was given the magazine for my birthday, since then I have had other things on my needles so did not get to it. Now that I have started, I wish had done so so much earlier on in winter. Its a really easy knit, so far, and I am enjoying it a lot. In just two days I finished the back and am now onto the fronts.

I did do something pretty silly in the back, which glares out to me in the photo, I re-knitted the yarn from my gauge swatch which had been sitting around for about 3 months. I hope once it is all done and blocked you won’t be able to see it.
The gauge is off by about 4 sts per inch so I am knitting the large size which should, and is looking to make the small size. I think I should have made it a bit longer as it does appear to be cropped, but I think I can work it at this length?

Fidgety

Posted in Knitting tagged , , at 5:21 pm by sbub

I work, part time, school hours or so they say. Really I do an 8 hour day squeezed into the 5 3/4 hours I am in the office, then at busy times I bring more home to do. I don’t mind this as I am on a wage and get paid for said work at home. Work has been crazy busy for me lately, I had 4 days off to spend time with TP during the term brake. It was lovely, even if the first two nights, while she slept in bed, I worked feverishly to get spreadsheets out to customers. On the 4th day, I couldn’t help myself I had to e-mail the office to see what was in store for me on my arrival back, there was lots so I started work straight away.

Now in a strange way I enjoy all this work, I feel useful. I like nothing better then to feel productive and I guess in a way this is why I knit. I can sit watching TV ( a hugely unproductive activity) and have something fruitful at the end. So times like now I get very fidgety.

I have just completed a large project, Eve, which I happily admire each day as TP walks out dressed. I have purchased lovely new yarn for a project which isn’t due till November and in all the excitement I had to cast on, my fingers wouldn’t let me not. So away I went, I struggled, things didn’t go too smooth, then I find that even though I did the all important gauge swatch it was turning out too big ACH! So what to do? I think lets just see what it will be like on smaller needles,so I get my cheep nasty circular needle ready and knit onto it, this is when disaster struck. The needle broke, taking with it half of my stitches, with disgust I frog the whole thing, I have until November after all!

So I sit there staring at my knitting paraphernalia sprawled around the living area and I start to get anxious. My stash has not been getting smaller, my last few projects I have purchased yarn, naughty me. I have a sudden need to stash bust.

I jump in the shower to calm myself, but I can’t get the yarn, nor knitting out of my head. I think how I want a cable scarf, perhaps the Log Cabin Socks left overs would do, how about the pink jet for TP, a hat maybe. The 2 1/2 balls I found from Eve maybe a small item is need form that. Then my mind goes to the UFOs, The long line Cardi I was designing for TP, I was 1/2 done, but couldn’t work out the armholes. I should pick it back up. What about my merino & silk waist clincher top, which has been worn once but was too short and I was never happy with the neck line. I have always wanted to fix it, what better time, it would still be cold enough to wear when I was done.

I look at the stash beside the bed. Lossy says he is “scared to come over your side incase I am for ever tangled in the yarn.” I set to clean up, so much yarn so little decisiveness. If only I could pick something and get it done. I look down and find my winter issue of VK sitting under the gauge swatch, which I now have no idea what needles were used, for the Puff Sleeve Jacket. That will be it, away I walk, yarn, magazine & needles in hand.

Daisy Chain Beanie

Posted in Knitting tagged , , , at 9:35 am by sbub

Saturday night while I waited for Besty to collect me to go have a girly night at the movies, I thought I should finish off the beanie I started for her before her little break. The pattern had caused me a little grief but I got it in the end and finished with a passable product. Tucking in all the ends was not fun, but I did it. Here TP models for you. I didn’t think Besty would be up to modelling it for the net. Daisy Chain Hat

The Firestarter Socks

Posted in Knitting tagged , , at 6:33 pm by sbub

The Firestarter Socks for Dad have been cast on, and what an effort that was. The pattern is written for working on a circular needle, well I didn’t have the correct size ciruclar needle, I did have DPN’s but only a set of 4. I tried & tried, but it just was not working I kept having issues when it came to the cable pattern as I was getting all tied up with my needles so mum has lent me one of her KnitPicks Options. They are lovely to knit with and I am now able to follow the pattern a little better, although I’m still getting bit ladders in the cable pattern, but I think that is from the twisted stitches.

Vintage Purls’ Sock Yarn

Posted in Knitting tagged , , , , at 10:19 am by sbub

I received today my package from Vintage Purls which included all this.

Unfortunately the needle tips are for Mum, but the lovely Brunswick I get to keep for a little while.
Vintage Purls Sock Yarn

I had read great reviews of Vintage Purls sock yarn but I wasn’t expecting it to be this good. I am very tempted to keep it myself, would make a lovely lacy scarf for myself, but then what would I do for Dad? The plans for this yarn is a pair of socks for my dad. He is a loyal wearer of woolen socks, so it seems like the perfect gift for him, and he loves green (lucky he isn’t too savvy on the internet, or the surprise might be ruined).

I searched around Ravelry for a while to find the right pattern to use for this lovely variegated yarn. Nothing too plain, as it would get boring and they would end up in hibernation, but nothing to fancy as cable or lace don’t play nice with variegated yarns. I eventually found the Firestarter pattern, this looks like the perfect solution, a nice little bit of cable to reduce the boredom and lots of stocking stitch, to show off the pretty yarn.

Eve Shrug Finished

All done, seams sewn & ends tucked in, don’t you hate the finishing on garments? TP is in love with it, much to my joy.

Over all, I’m pretty happy with it.

The pattern was ok to work with, once I graphed the cable pattern, and I think the fit is ok, over clothes not PJ’s. I’m pretty proud to say there are no mistakes in it. :)

My Girl Can KNIT!

Posted in Knitting tagged , at 5:54 pm by sbub

Can you tell I’m excited / proud? TP has been trying for ages to knit, but would get really frustrated and give up quickly. After a trip the other day to the LYS, where she found this book she has been really keen to give it another go, so today we sat down and gave it a go. After I cast on for her and did the first row, I sat behind her just to guide things along. The needles are far too long for her, but she did it. I soon discovered that she prefers the continental style of knitting, meaning she holds the yarn in her right hand, so I had to think hard about which way she should be putting the yarn over the needle, but I think we got it right.

Secrets Revealed

Posted in Photography tagged , at 10:17 am by sbub

Saturday Besty & myself headed off to Auckland Museum for the Secrets Revealed exhibition. Besty gives a much better review of it then I ever could, so I send you over there to read about the exhibition. I will just share with you my photographs. It was a real challenge to catch the magic of the exhibition on film (really CCD as it is digital) Auckland Museum allows photography but no tripods, so when I taking these shots I relied on a high ISO, 3200 for some of them, a large aperture and a very steady hand, although I have a hand with that with the image stabilization on my camera.

This first shot I took two versions of, this one on tungsten white balance and the first on auto white balance, I wasn’t sure which would work best at the time. I wanted to catch the beauty I was seeing and wasn’t sure if the colour cast would cause problems. I’m glad I did take the two so I could choose at home.DSC00169

This canoe looked great on the “water” and with the aid of a human tripod (leaning on the fence and placing my legs to form a triangle) I was able to catch it, just how it was.

I really should have taken more notice of what this was, but I was trying to work out how to capture the lighting that I overlooked it.

This is the knee of the skeleton, I had to do a little bit of burning in on the far left point of it, but I love the way it turned out.
DSC00155

And the whole skeleton, with the flash this looked pretty boring, but I’m really happy with this.

Overall I can say that I’m really happy with the shots I got on Saturday, I think I over came the obstacles and got some great shots. I have more to show, which I will do in time, the rest do need a bit of work in Photoshop. I’ll leave you with my favorite.
